Planning your training and nutrition – you need a PLAN B too
Do you do much planning when it comes to training and nutrition? Even if you do some planning do you find yourself starting off with good intentions but somehow not following through? Do other things get in the way?
For example, you have a regular training time which is great as you are unlikely to schedule other things in this time. Sometimes, however other things come up which make it impossible for you to train at the scheduled time. It takes time and energy to come up with a Plan B or to figure something else out. The quickest and easiest option is just to skip it.
It also takes time to sit and plan what food to buy for the week. Sometimes that does not happen and meals are just done on the run. You pick up whatever is easiest and quickest and all your best intentions to be healthy somehow evaporate. It seems easiest to just grab what you can.
The key is to be conscious of the fact that training and nutrition require PLANNING. Set aside a little bit of time on your weekend or maybe a Friday afternoon for that. Make it a HABIT to have a little planning session. When you make plans – also make a plan for when plans do not go to plan. Good planning includes a plan B.
The best plans include a B Plan otherwise known as a contingency plan. So think about:
- alternatives you can pick up when planned training sessions do not happen (eg. a run you might attempt, a different class you might try, an online workout you like, an at home workout you can do)
- what foods/ what meals you might have at the ready so that healthy eating is still possible when plans do not go to plan (frozen vegetables in the freezer, a meal or 2 you have frozen when you made a double batch, a healthy takeaway place you know and trust, tins of tuna, ready made quinoa mix, tins of beans, eggs).
The more you can get into the habit of planning (including a plan for when plans go off to the rails) the more you will find yourself being more CONSISTENT. Sticking to plans is really hard. That’s why it is so handy to have a think in advance of what you might do if the plan doesn’t work out.
