Most of us can relate to a “diet” or a “health kick” more than “lasting habits”. We decide to get rid of those extra kilos by restricting our eating for a certain period of time. Or we decide to embark on a hard core exercise regime to “get fit quick”. Basically it is like a “blitz”. We plan to spend a few weeks suffering to reap long term rewards.
This approach may even work, but it is unlikely to have a lasting effect. When we start “eating normally” and go back to our daily routine which may not include much activity, the weight goes back on. Sometimes in our enthusiasm for “normality” we may end up with even more extra weight.
What is the answer to more long term success? The answer is not a diet or a health kick. It is a permanent change – a series of new healthy lasting habits that can be maintained FOREVER.
Most people find it almost impossible to make lots of permanent changes at the same time. The secret is to implement them bit by bit. You should try to nail one change and then move on to another. Bring each change into your life with the aim of getting off the “lose weight/put it back on” cycle.
The first change I suggest you make is making sure you drink enough water. Once you do this, the next change might be to increase your protein intake. Next add in more vegetables with every meal. It is hard to do all of these things at once. Focus on one new habit. Or maybe focus on eliminating one habit that is not aligned with your goal. You will find yourself succeeding at sticking to your plan if you do one habit at a time.
